Barack Obama Reflects on Passing of Civil Rights Activist Del Martin

Barack Obama Campaign has released the following statement from Barack Obama on the passing of Civil Rights Activist Del Martin:

"Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear that Del Martin had passed. Del committed her life to fighting discrimination and promoting equality. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her spouse Phyllis Lyon, and all those who were touched by her life."

Del Martin and her partner Phyllis Lyon founded the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) in San Francisco in 1955, that became the first social and political organization for lesbians in the United States. They both acted as president and editor of The Ladder until 1963, and remained involved in the DOB until joining the National Organization for Women (NOW) as the first lesbian couple to do so.

Both women worked to form the Council of Religion and Homosexuality (CRH) in northern California to persuade ministers to accept homosexuals into churches, and use their influence to decriminalize homosexuality in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They became politically active in San Francisco's first gay political organization, the Alice B. Toklas Democratic Club, influence Dianne Feinstein to sponsor a citywide bill to outlaw employment discrimination for gays and lesbians. Both served in the White House Conference on Aging in 1995.

They were married on June 16, 2008 in the first same-sex wedding to take place in San Francisco after the California Supreme Court's decision in In re Marriage Cases legalized same-sex marriage in California.

Obama for America Announces Expansion of LGBT Leadership Team

obamapride.gif
Chicago, IL -- The Obama for America campaign today announced a significant expansion of its National LGBT Steering and Policy Committee, as well as its grassroots infrastructure (Obama Pride). Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), who was the Chair of Hillary Clinton's National LGBT Steering Committee, has joined Tobias Barrington Wolff, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a civil rights lawyer who chaired Obama's LGBT Policy Committee during the primary, as co-chairs of the new National LGBT Steering and Policy Committee. Over the last few weeks, dozens of members of Clinton's committee have joined the Steering and Policy Committee, and the committee will continue to grow between now and Election Day.

"I am proud to support Barack Obama for President and work hard for his election because we share a commitment to equality for all Americans. This is our quest and our common goal," said Congresswoman Baldwin. "From now through November, we will reach out aggressively to our fellow LGBT Americans to ensure that they know there is only one candidate in this race who will stand up for equal rights and build a coalition that can deliver the change that we desperately need," Baldwin said.

Also, grassroots leaders who held leadership positions in both Obama and Clinton's primary campaigns have joined to lead the national grassroots mobilization of LGBT voters. Obama Pride will build upon the work that started in the primary, when LGBT supporters participated in pride festivals across the country and organized leadership networks in over 40 cities. Obama Pride will organize networks of activists in all fifty states who are committed to identifying, registering and turning out lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender voters for Barack in November. There will be five national co-chairs of Obama Pride. In alphabetical order, they are:

Marsha Botzer has served as co-chair of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Board of Directors during 2005-6. She is a Founding Member of Equal Rights Washington, and founded Seattle's Ingersoll Gender Center, an organization that has assisted transgender people for decades. She co-chairs the Safe Schools Coalition, works with Seattle's Pride Foundation on national issues, and serves on an Advisory Committee for Antioch University. She is a member of Obama Pride Seattle.

Mandy Carter has been organizing North Carolina African Americans and LGBT people for years, and has served as a member of the DNC. She founded Southerners On New Ground (SONG) in 1993 and was a leader in Harvey Gantt's two campaigns for U.S. Senate. She has done the hard work of organizing LGBT grassroots networks, especially of people of color, throughout the South. She was a member of Hillary Clinton's North Carolina LGBT Steering Committee.

Jesse Garcia is a gay Latino activist from Dallas, Texas, who has been involved in the Democratic Party since 1994. Garcia has been twice elected to serve on the National Stonewall Democrats board of directors, guiding strategy for the 90 Stonewall chapters and affiliates across the nation. He is the President of the Dallas Stonewall Democrats, and served on Hillary Clinton's National LGBT Steering Committee.

Campbell Spencer has been fighting for LGBT equality since she campaigned against the marriage ban in Hawaii in 1998. She was a field organizer at the Human Rights Campaign, led LGBT outreach for Vice President Gore's campaign in 2000, and was Base Vote Director at the DNC. She worked on John Kerry's Presidential campaign organizing six vital primary states, and was an active supporter of Hillary Clinton's campaign this year. Now President of Boost Strategies in Washington DC, she serves as the senior strategist for One Iowa.

Eric Stern has led Obama grassroots organizing efforts since February of this year. He was the Director of LGBT Outreach at the DNC in the 2004 election, and then served as Executive Director of the National Stonewall Democrats. He was a lead organizer of LGBT support for John Edwards during the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, and has served in a leadership role in Obama's LGBT organizing efforts since February of this year.

Joan Garry, former executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and Kevin Jennings, founder and executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, continue to lead the Finance Committee.

The Steering and Policy Committee will make sure LGBT people are aware of the vast differences between Barack Obama and John McCain on issues important to the LGBT community, and Obama Pride will make sure LGBT activists and voters are organized and registering, identifying, persuading and turning out voters in all fifty states.

"On every issue facing the LGBT community, John McCain promises a third Bush term," said Garcia. "He's promised to appoint judges to the Supreme Court like Scalia and Alito, and we can't afford that.

"It's been twelve long years since John McCain cast the deciding vote that killed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act," said Carter. "It's time we elect a President who fights for the basic principles of non-discrimination, on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity."

"Barack Obama has come out in strong opposition to the divisive and discriminatory amendments in California, Arizona and Florida," said Spencer. "That's important to me and to my family. There's no question that LGBT voters need to work hard to help elect Barack, and I'm excited to be part of this effort."

"I'm proud to have the support of Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, the Obama Pride Co-Chairs, and so many leaders across the LGBT community," said Senator Obama. "I believe that we can achieve equality for the millions of LGBT people in this country, and with this team I know that the LGBT community will play a major role in our campaign to bring change to Washington."

Tammy Baldwin: Why I'm Backing Barack

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)

For years, Democrats have shared a laugh over Will Rogers’ quip, "I belong to no organized party…I’m a Democrat." But this year’s election is no laughing matter. The Bush/Cheney regime – the most destructive, debilitating, and demoralizing in memory – perhaps even in history – is almost over and this election affords us the chance to write a new chapter in American history…or not. Should we vote for change or accept the status quo? The question could not be more clear. The correct answer could not be more obvious.

The long primary season gave us the opportunity to hear from the candidates and voice our support for one or the other. In that primary season, I endorsed the candidacy of Senator Hillary Clinton and I supported her throughout her historic and well-fought campaign. Senator Clinton and I share an unshakeable commitment to health care for all in this country.

But the primary season is now over and, like Hillary and millions of other Democrats, Independents, and many Republicans, I am proud to support the candidacy of Barack Obama for President. Endorsing Barack was not a difficult decision and it is not based on party affiliation alone. Rather, it is based on my concept of what the promise of America means and on the stark differences between the two candidates.

For me, the promise of America is a commitment to our collective well-being, rather than each struggling to get his or her own. The promise of America is embracing our democracy and protecting it and working to make it operate even better on behalf of the people. The promise of America is in pushing, prodding, and testing our democracy to make it flourish, not chipping away at its very foundation in pursuit of a political agenda or personal gain.

If elected President, Barack Obama will move us forward charting a new, hopeful, progressive course, while John McCain would keep us mired in the failed policies and divisive politics of the status quo.

Barack Obama will get our troops out of Iraq.

John McCain is willing to leave them there indefinitely.

Barack Obama will work to ensure health care for all Americans.

John McCain is willing to leave people behind while enriching insurance companies.

Barack Obama will make it a priority to protect and safeguard Roe v. Wade.

John McCain has pledged to fill Supreme Court vacancies with justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade.

Barack Obama wants to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

John McCain believes the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy has been ‘very effective’ and wants to leave it in place.

Barack Obama will support legislation expanding federal employment non-discrimination laws and federal hate crime laws to assure the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans.

John McCain will not.

I am working to elect Barack Obama President, not because I'm toeing a party line, but because we share a commitment to equality for all Americans. We share core values – a commitment to the common good and an aversion to power being granted through friendship and favors. And we share a belief in the power of the individual to create change and the knowledge that in a democracy, "We, the People" decide what is possible.

I am working to elect Barack Obama President because he dares to believe in and work for "one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Senator Obama Responds to 40% Reported Increase in Domestic HIV/AIDS Cases

Chicago, IL -- Senator Obama released the following statement on the Center for Disease Control's report about new cases of HIV/AIDS in the United States.

"We have now learned that 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the United States in 2006, not 40,000 that had been previously cited. These new figures should bring new focus to our efforts to address AIDS and HIV here at home.

"As president, I am committed to developing a National AIDS Strategy to decrease new HIV infections and improve health outcomes for Americans living with HIV/AIDS. Across the nation, we also need to prevent the spread of HIV and get people into treatment by expanding access to testing and comprehensive education programs. This report also demonstrates the need for more timely data about HIV transmission so that we can effectively evaluate prevention efforts.

"Combating HIV/AIDS also demands closing the gaps in opportunity that exist in our society so that we can strengthen our public health. We must also overcome the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS – a stigma that is too often tied to homophobia. We need to encourage folks to get tested and accelerate HIV/AIDS research toward an effective cure because we have a moral obligation to join together to meet this
challenge, and to do so with the urgency this epidemic demands."

HRC Endorses Barack Obama

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights group, today announced that the organization will endorse Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for president of the United States. The decision was made by the HRC Board of Directors based on Senator Obama's support for GLBT equality, his demonstrated leadership, and his unwavering commitment to civil rights.

"HRC is proud to throw our full support behind Senator Obama's presidential campaign," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "Senator Obama has consistently shown that he understands, as we do, that, GLBT rights are civil rights, and human rights.  Senator Obama has said that embracing 'our gay brothers and sisters' is true to Martin Luther King's vision; I know that Senator Obama's vision is one of equality, fairness, and justice for all of us," he said.

Solmonese added "We have just witnessed a historic primary contest in which two champions of our community demonstrated that they hear our voices and share our dreams.  For millions across this country, their candidacies - as the first woman and the first African American to be top contenders for the nomination of a major party - have already been life-changing, inspiring, and groundbreaking.  Senators Obama and Clinton both remained our allies whether they were campaigning in New Mexico or Nebraska; in California or Kansas.  They are, quite simply, heroes to anyone fighting for equality,"

Senator Obama supports federal benefits and protections for same-sex couples, a fully-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act and hate crimes legislation, comprehensive sex education, the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, and increased funding for HIV/AIDS. He opposes the federal marriage amendment and bans on adoption by GLBT people.   Senator Obama participated in HRC's and Logo's historic presidential forum in 2007, and submitted HRC's presidential questionnaire.

"The Human Rights Campaign has been at the forefront of the fight for GLBT equality and opportunity, and I am proud to have its endorsement," said Senator Obama.  "Too often, the issue of GLBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us.  But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans.  I look forward to working with HRC to end discrimination against GLBT Americans and to ensure that all of our citizens are treated with dignity and respect."

Solmonese concluded, "I've been consistently impressed by Senator Obama's willingness to speak about GLBT issues in front of diverse audiences. Matters of life and livelihood for GLBT Americans are on the line in this election and after eight years of an anti-gay stranglehold on the presidency, Sen. Obama's message of fairness and acceptance is a breath of fresh air."

Obama Supporters Say No To Sam Nunn

As the list of potential vice-presidential candidates narrows, supporters of Barack Obama are sending a clear message that former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn is an unacceptable choice.

Political Strategist David Mixner writes on Huffington Post: "There are some situations so obvious that you almost feel you don't have to comment upon them. Then you wake up one morning and realize not only should you have expressed your opinion but you should have done it loudly and resoundingly and repeatedly. The odious concept of former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn serving on a ticket with Senator Obama is one of those situations."

Nunn once fired two employees simply because they were gay and voted against the employment non-discrimination act.  This places Nunn far outside of mainstream America which overwhelmingly believes such discrimination is unacceptable.  a May 2006 poll conducted by Gallup found that 89% of Americans believe gay men and lesbians should have equal rights in the workplace, and public support for workplace equality continues to grow.

The GLBT website Equality Giving has launched a new web resource this week, documenting both Nunn's anti-gay record and the strong opposition to Nunn in the GLBT Community.  Critics of Sam Nunn include Rep. Barney Frank who writes: "I would be virtually useless in trying to convince other gays and lesbians to support the ticket."

Transgender Advocates Rally for Obama

Dear Fellow Transgender Advocate,

This year we have an opportunity to elect a President who will be the most transgender-supportive in history.

But electing a candidate isn't enough just by itself. Unless we're visibly and vocally involved with campaigns and giving our time, energy, money, and ideas we will miss out on an opportunity to create a relationship with a President who has already said he's willing to stand with us. That is why we are asking you to join with us in supporting Barack Obama.

We've set up a specific page to track donations from the transgender community and our allies to Sen. Obama's campaign. You can donate by clicking here:

http://www.actblue.com/page/trans

In both the United States and Illinois Senate, Barack Obama has a long commitment to supporting the LGBT community—and specifically the transgender community. Most recently, here is what he said when issuing his statement on Pride month:

"It's time to live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect. Let's enact federal civil rights legislation to outlaw hate crimes and protect workers against discrimination based upon sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. . .

"We are ready to accomplish these goals because of the courage and persistence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who have been working every day to achieve equal rights. The gay couple who demand equal treatment in our family laws as they raise their children; the lesbian soldier who wants nothing more than to serve her country openly and honestly; the transgender workers who ask for the simple dignity of being judged by the quality of their work. Generations of LGBT Americans, at once ordinary and extraordinary, have made possible this moment in our history. With leadership and hard work, we can fulfill the promise of equality for all."

--Sen. Barack Obama
June 6, 2008

Fully inclusive hate crime protections, fully inclusive employment non-discrimination, and a fully inclusive vision of the American family; these are the values we can have in our next President.

But he can't win—and our community won't advance—without your support.

We're encouraging you to give today to Barack Obama for President at a special fundraising page that will track the impact of the transgender community and our allies on the election.

http://www.actblue.com/page/trans

This page, launched in conjunction with Stonewall Democrats, will track donations to the Obama campaign from the transgender community and our allies. The money raised on the page will go directly to Sen. Obama's campaign.

We've set a very modest starting goal of 75 donors. Can you be one of those 75? Can you promote this page on your blog? Can you help spread the word and email your friends and family?

http://www.actblue.com/page/trans

This election is too important to sit on the sidelines. Let's elect a pro-equality Democrat and help build power for our community.

Obama Opposes Prop 8 California Anti-Marriage Amendment

In a letter to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, Sen. Barack Obama stated his opposition to the California constitutional amendment. Here is that letter.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for the opportunity to welcome everyone to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pridc Breakfast and to congratulate you on continuing a legacy of success, stretching back thirty-six years. As one of the oldest and most influential LGBT organizations in the country, you have continually rallied to support Democratic candidates and causes, and have fought tirelessly to secure equal rights and opportunities for LGBT Americans in California and throughout the country.

As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination. And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.

For too long. issues of LGBT rights have been exploited by those seeking to divide us. It's time to move beyond polarization and live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect. This is no less than a core issue about who we are as Democrats and as Americans.

Finally, I want to congratulate all of you who have shown your love for each other by getting married these last few weeks. My thanks again to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club for allowing me to be a part of today's celebration. I look forward to working with you in the coming months and years, and I wish you all continued success.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
